The garden this year has been an adventure in watching nature's surprises. We had a bunch of onions come up this spring that I planted a year earlier. Our strawberry plants took off this spring. They produced some very yummy strawberries. The girls would eat the berries every time they went outside to play. We had a great crop of spinach and lettuce. The potato plants have not done as well; I think I need to plant them in a new location. Our tomato plants are finally starting to produce fruit. We had a long cool spring which kept the warmer weather plants from growing real fast. I picked our first 2 zucchinis yesterday. It is always great fun to see how our garden does each year; we learn a lot of new things for the next growing season.

The onion and strawberry plants are so big compared to our newly planted lettuces, spinach, and zucchini plants.
I have let my onion plants go to seed. It is really an amazing process. First, the plants produce small pointy pods on the ends of the tall green stalks. Then the pod gets larger until it explodes out of the covering into this puff ball. The balls get larger as they continue to grow. In a few more weeks, I will cut off the puff balls and put them into a brown paper bag until next spring. Then we will have new seeds for next spring.
We got a lot of beautiful & yummy strawberries. I'm going to transplant these healthy plants into some of our flower beds near the house. I want to let them expand and branch out. They have out grown the space I put them into last spring. It's amazing how quickly 5 little plants can turn into 50 plants.
The spinach plants loved the cool spring. I got these enormous leaves on the plants that were so delicious. We were so surprised that the leaves were not bitter. One leaf was enough for one salad.
I put some meat and chopped fresh veggies into some of the large spinach leaves. They were delicious.
